Yes—but mostly for reasons candidates misdiagnose
The Agoda assessment can feel hard because it compresses mixed reasoning, unfamiliar presentation and role-specific selection into a short session. For analytical applicants on SHL Verify G+, the published format combines 3 abilities, allows up to 30 questions and runs for 36 minutes. That is a switching and pacing problem as much as a knowledge problem.
It is not uniformly hard across every job because there is no single Agoda test. Tech applicants can receive coding assignments. Marketing and Product can face business-analytical work. Strategic Partnerships can see graphs, charts and logical reasoning. People, Finance and Legal routes may examine data literacy, stakeholder management and relevant expertise. Some roles skip assessment entirely.
My view is blunt: the test's reputation comes less from advanced mathematics than from ordinary reasoning under imperfect time. Candidates who revise sophisticated formulas while ignoring table-reading, logical quantifiers and visual rule testing are preparing for the wrong difficulty.
The time pressure is real, but the average is misleading
Thirty questions across 36 minutes implies about 72 seconds per question if the maximum appears. Yet adaptive delivery means the item path can vary, and questions do not require equal work. A short logical item and a dense chart should not receive identical pacing simply because an average exists.
One recent Agoda candidate reported 24 questions in 36 minutes. They answered 18 questions and progressed to interview. This account proves that at least one successful path did not require visible completion. It does not prove a universal safe count, because accuracy, difficulty and team cutoff remain unknown.
The pressure therefore has 2 layers. The clock is visible; the uncertain scoring path is not. Candidates often react by rushing every item, which converts manageable questions into avoidable errors.
A better definition of “hard” is whether you can maintain a method while the question type changes. If your accuracy is strong in isolated numerical and logical sets but falls in mixed sets, the primary problem is switching. If both untimed and timed accuracy are weak, it is a method problem. Those demand different fixes.
Adaptive testing feels harder when you are doing well
SHL Verify G+ is adaptive. In practical terms, the assessment can adjust the item path to the candidate's responses. Two people applying to the same team may not see the same sequence or leave with the same subjective difficulty.
This creates a counterintuitive experience: difficult later items are not necessarily evidence of failure. They can be consistent with the assessment locating the upper edge of your ability. Likewise, a smooth-feeling session does not reveal the final standing.
Do not score the test emotionally while taking it. “The last 3 questions were brutal” is not usable information. Return to the task in front of you and apply the smallest complete method. Adaptive difficulty is exactly why comparing recalled question counts online is unreliable.
It also explains why Agoda's absence of a published universal pass mark matters. The hiring team can use a role-relevant threshold, and SHL can report comparative performance rather than a school-style percentage. Difficulty and outcome are related, but the feeling of difficulty is not the score.
Numerical difficulty: business data, not exotic mathematics
Agoda's official assessment guide repeatedly names numerical thinking, statistical thinking, charts and data literacy for non-Tech roles. The hard part is often choosing the correct relationship from a compact business display.
Typical burdens include:
- distinguishing percentage change from percentage-point change;
- choosing the correct denominator;
- converting currencies or units;
- comparing rates when totals differ;
- reading a multi-series chart accurately;
- deciding whether the data supports a conclusion.
None requires university-level theory, but each punishes imprecision. A candidate can calculate perfectly and still answer the wrong question by using the final value as the percentage base.
Test yourself with 20 questions untimed. If you cannot explain the setup before calculating, time is not the root problem. Write the target, relationship and unit. Once setup accuracy is stable, reduce the time gradually and mix charts with other question types.
Deductive difficulty: plausible is not proven
Deductive reasoning is hard because everyday conversation tolerates assumptions that formal questions do not. If the prompt says all revenue analysts use a dashboard, it does not follow that everyone using the dashboard is a revenue analyst. The most difficult word is often "must" — a conclusion is necessary only if no valid counterexample exists. Translate the statements into short constraints and try to break each option; if 1 counterexample obeys the prompt and defeats the conclusion, reject it.
Ordering problems add working-memory load. Externalize it with a small grid or sequence if the official rules allow scratch work. Do not hold 5 conditions in your head simply to prove that you can.
Inductive difficulty: too many possible patterns
An abstract sequence can support several plausible rules after only 2 panels. The correct rule must explain the full sequence and distinguish the answer choices.
Scan features in a fixed order: count, position, direction, fill, size and interaction. Start with one rule, test it across every frame and add complexity only if needed. When 2 answer options share position but differ in fill, isolate the fill rule instead of solving the entire puzzle again.
The common trap is protecting an early guess. Candidates see rotation, ignore a contradictory frame and invent an exception. Treat each frame as evidence. A rule that fails once is not the rule unless a second alternating process explains that failure cleanly.
Practise describing patterns in one sentence. If you cannot say what changes and by how much, you probably have an impression rather than a verified rule.
Difficulty changes by role
Analytical, Product and Marketing
These routes can combine aptitude testing with later business cases. Product candidates may see numerical tasks during interviews as well as product scenarios. Marketing can add a recorded communication component. The challenge is not merely passing one reasoning screen; it is carrying structured analysis into a business recommendation.
Strategic Partnerships and Supply
Agoda says Strategic Partnerships assessments can involve graphs, charts and logical reasoning. Supply and corporate roles can include data literacy, stakeholder management and job expertise. Commercial context raises the interpretation burden even when the arithmetic remains basic.
People roles
Some People-team vacancies use SHL focused on cognitive ability or behavioral fit. Agoda's official People guide says assessment applies only to certain roles, followed by 2 to 5 interview rounds depending on seniority. A behavioral inventory should not be prepared for as though it were a numerical speed test.
Technology
Agoda says Data Engineering and Security can use coding tests, with Python and SQL particularly relevant to Data Engineering. Other Backend, Frontend, Data and IT Operations tests vary by technology. Candidate reports describe routes involving 2 HackerRank questions, coding interviews and platform or system architecture. For these applicants, algorithmic constraints and explanation quality replace the G+ mix as the main difficulty.
Customer Experience
Customer Service assessments may cover language, communication, problem solving, numerical thinking and occupational personality. Operational roles can add data literacy and project or stakeholder management. Breadth, not a single advanced topic, creates the challenge.
Lined up side by side, the difference in what "hard" means per route is stark. An Analytical candidate might spend 36 minutes on 3 abstract reasoning abilities and then, weeks later, defend a business recommendation built on 2 hours of case prep. A Technology candidate might face 2 HackerRank questions in under 1 hour, then a system-architecture round with no fixed time limit at all, where the difficulty is holding a coherent design under open-ended follow-up questions. A Customer Experience candidate might never see an adaptive reasoning test but instead face 4 or 5 short scenario prompts testing tone and judgment under a strict per-response time limit. Preparing for the wrong one of these — drilling abstract-pattern recognition for a role that actually tests scenario judgment — is the single most common reason candidates report the process as harder than it needed to be.
How to tell whether you are ready
Readiness should be demonstrated across repeated conditions. Complete 3 comparable mixed sets and record accuracy, completion and error type. One excellent run may be luck; one poor run may reflect fatigue. A stable trend is more informative.
You are probably ready when:
- you identify the required reasoning mode within 10 seconds;
- you can explain why the rejected options fail;
- the same error label does not dominate 2 consecutive sets;
- time pressure reduces accuracy only slightly;
- unfamiliar surface details do not change your method.
Do not require perfect completion. The reported candidate who advanced after 18 answers on 24 questions is a useful reminder that visible activity is not the full score. Equally, do not use that story to justify chronic stalling. Your practice should show that long items are conscious decisions, not lost time.
Why a hard-feeling test can still end well
Candidates tend to remember uncertainty more vividly than routine answers. In a 36 minutes adaptive test, the last difficult item can color the memory of the whole session. That feeling is not a report.
Agoda does not normally send a numeric score. Candidates receive feedback on possible improvement areas, and progression is the clearest practical signal that the team's threshold was met. Until the recruiter communicates, you lack the data to grade yourself.
Avoid post-test answer reconstruction from fragments. Different candidates may have received different adaptive paths, roles and configurations. Use the wait to prepare for the next likely stage: a case, technical discussion, behavioral interview or stakeholder round.
The strongest candidates do not need to feel certain after every question. They need a reliable process while uncertain.
Making the assessment easier without making it trivial
First, practise the exact route named in your invitation. Second, separate method practice from timed practice. Third, review guessed-but-correct answers as seriously as wrong ones; a lucky answer hides an unstable process.
Use Agoda's 5 days window deliberately. Day 1 can establish a baseline. Days 2 and 3 repair the largest error categories. Day 4 rehearses mixed timing. Day 5 should be light review and environment setup, not an exhausting marathon.
Agoda itself advises candidates to use a practice round, minimize distractions and ensure a stable connection. The company says assessments typically run from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Starting rested, powered and interruption-free removes difficulty that has nothing to do with reasoning.
Finally, read the rules on the official screen. Navigation, calculator access and item behavior can differ from practice sites. Familiarity should reduce cognitive load, not create assumptions.
