The emotional experience is the same in both: a persistent sense of being behind, of never finishing an item cleanly. That feeling is normal and near-universal, and it causes the single most damaging behaviour on this test, which is panic-rushing the middle of a block and losing marks on items that were well within reach.

The counter is knowing in advance that not finishing is expected on the fast configurations, and having a pace rule you rehearsed rather than one you invent under pressure. The abstract block does the most damage

The second is unfamiliarity. Most adults have not looked at figural pattern reasoning since school, if ever. There is no professional context in which you routinely decide whether a shape sequence rotates or reflects, so candidates arrive without any method at all — and without a method, the only available approach is staring at the sequence hoping the rule surfaces. That works on easy items and fails completely on harder ones, which is exactly where the time goes.

The rules themselves are not complicated: rotation, reflection, number of elements, shading, size, position within the frame, and rules that alternate between successive figures. There are not many of them. The alternating-rule case is where most of the perceived difficulty concentrates — when one rule governs the odd-numbered figures and another the even-numbered ones, the sequence looks incoherent until you separate them, at which point it usually becomes obvious.

Because the entire gap is familiarity with a finite rule set, this is also the block where preparation produces the most dramatic visible improvement. Candidates routinely move from finding it impenetrable to finding it routine within a fortnight, which is not equally true of the other two blocks.

Quantifiers add a second layer. A statement that strengthens the passage — turning "some regions grew" into "all regions grew", or "may increase" into "will increase" — is unsupported rather than supported, and these are easy to skim past at speed.

Where the block also includes word relationships, analogies or vocabulary, a different difficulty appears: these are recognition tasks, and candidates lose time deliberating between two plausible options rather than committing. The fix is to define the relationship precisely before looking at the options, then commit.

Numerical: reading under pressure, not mathematics

Candidates brace for hard mathematics here and are usually surprised. The operations are school-level applied to business-flavoured data.

The real difficulty is accurate reading at speed. Data presentations contain traps that have nothing to do with calculation: units in thousands or millions, columns for different periods that are easy to confuse, index values rather than absolute figures, footnotes that adjust a series. Ten seconds of orientation at the start of an exhibit prevents most of these, and candidates under time pressure skip exactly that ten seconds.

Question wording is the second difficulty. Solving accurately for the wrong quantity — the change when the total was asked for, one period when an average was wanted — is a very common way to lose a mark while doing the arithmetic perfectly.

The third is the calculator question, which varies by administration. Candidates who practised with a calculator and find they do not have one lose far more time than the arithmetic itself would suggest; candidates fumbling an unfamiliar on-screen calculator lose almost as much. Reading habits are removable: orienting to units and columns before calculating, reading questions to the end, judging statements strictly against the passage, watching quantifiers. Each is a specific habit trainable in days.

Pacing is removable. Calculating a per-block budget from the instruction screen, setting one mid-block checkpoint instead of watching the countdown, rehearsing an abandonment threshold, and internalising that time does not carry between blocks — all of these reduce the panic that causes rushed errors.

Version mismatch is removable simply by reading your invitation and practising at the right tempo.

What is not removable is the underlying processing speed the instrument is designed to measure. There is a ceiling. But most candidates are nowhere near theirs on a first attempt, because what limits a first attempt is unfamiliarity, a missing method and hesitation rather than capability.
