TCS is India's largest IT services company and one of the top 10 globally by market capitalisation. The TCS NQT is the gateway for freshers to join TCS across three tiers — Ninja, Digital, and Prime — each offering progressively higher packages. A single exam determines which tier you're eligible for, making preparation strategy critical.
The exam is a single 190-minute session divided into two mandatory parts. You cannot skip sections or revisit previous questions. Once you answer a question and move to the next, you cannot go back. Switching browser tabs results in immediate disqualification.

If you clear the NQT cutoff, you're invited for interviews:
Technical Round: Deep dive into data structures, OOP concepts, DBMS, and your final year project. For Digital and Prime candidates, expect live coding or complex system design questions.
Managerial Round: Problem-solving, situational judgement, and project management scenarios.
HR Round: Behavioural assessment, communication check, and document verification. Relocation flexibility is often discussed.
The three tiers aren't just pay bands — they route you into meaningfully different kinds of work, which is worth knowing before you decide how hard to push for a higher tier. Ninja-tier hires typically land in TCS's larger delivery and support-focused project teams, covering a broad range of client accounts across TCS's traditional IT-services business — solid, stable work, but with less initial exposure to newer technology areas. Digital-tier hires are routed more specifically toward TCS's digital transformation practice — cloud, data engineering, and modern application development — reflecting the higher technical bar the Advanced section sets for this tier. Prime-tier hires, having cleared the toughest bar (both Advanced coding problems solved), get first access to TCS's most technically demanding and often most visible projects, including newer specialist streams. Because tier placement follows directly from your NQT performance rather than a separate application, the practical takeaway is the same regardless of which tier you're ultimately aiming for: solving both Advanced coding problems fully, not just clearing the Foundation cutoff comfortably, is what actually and reliably determines whether you land Digital/Prime-track work rather than the standard Ninja track the great majority of candidates end up placed into by default each and every hiring cycle.
Coding-decoding and logical deduction questions make up a large share of the Reasoning Ability section:
Q. If SUNDAY is coded as YTMCZX (each letter shifted by a fixed rule), what rule is being applied, and how would MONDAY be coded using the same rule?
Hint: compare each letter of SUNDAY to the corresponding letter of YTMCZX position by position.
A. S→Y (+6), U→T (-1), N→M (-1), D→C (-1), A→Z (-1, wrapping), Y→X (-1) — most letters shift back by one, except the first. Once you notice the pattern doesn't apply uniformly, the correct approach is checking for a reversed-alphabet substitution (A↔Z, B↔Y, and so on) instead, which fits every letter in SUNDAY→YTMCZX consistently. Applying that same reversed-alphabet substitution to MONDAY gives NLMWZB.
This style of question rewards recognising the underlying transformation rule quickly rather than solving letter-by-letter through trial and error — with roughly 75 seconds per question across a mixed 20-question set, spending too long testing one wrong hypothesis (like a simple fixed shift) before switching to the correct one (a reversed-alphabet substitution) is the most common way capable candidates run out of time on this section.
Since the Advanced Coding section carries 90 of the 115 minutes in Part B, understanding how it's actually scored changes how you should approach a problem you can't fully solve. TCS awards partial credit based on how many of a problem's hidden test cases your submitted code passes, not just full marks for a fully correct, all-cases-passing solution or zero for anything less — so a solution that handles the common cases correctly but misses an edge case (empty input, a boundary value, a very large input size) still earns meaningful partial credit rather than nothing. This has a direct strategic implication: if you're running low on time on a coding problem, submitting a partially-correct solution that handles the main logic is almost always better than leaving the problem blank or spending your remaining time chasing a single edge case at the risk of running out of time entirely. Candidates aiming specifically for Prime, where both coding problems need to be solved in full, should budget time deliberately and evenly across both problems rather than perfecting one at the real expense of even attempting the second one at all.
