HireVue is the world's leading video interview and digital assessment platform, used by over 1,000 global employers to screen millions of candidates per year. If you've received an invitation to a "video interview" or "digital interview" from a major employer, there's a very high probability it's HireVue. The platform combines pre-recorded video interviews with AI-powered scoring and — for many employers — game-based cognitive assessments embedded directly into the same session.

HireVue video interview format

The standard HireVue pre-recorded interview works as follows: you log in to the HireVue portal from any device (laptop or phone), read the question on screen, and record your response using your webcam. You typically have:

HireVue AI scoring: what it actually measures

HireVue's AI scoring evaluates multiple dimensions of your video responses:

DimensionHow it's measuredPreparation tip
Word choice and languageNLP analysis of vocabulary, industry terms, response structureUse specific, precise language. Avoid filler words (um, like, basically).
Speech fluencyPause frequency, speech rate, disfluenciesPractise aloud until responses flow naturally. Record yourself and review.
Answer structureSTAR format recognition, completeness of responseAlways complete the Result/Impact portion of your answer — many candidates trail off after Action.
Facial expressions (deprecated in some markets)Emotion detection — positive engagement signalsMaintain eye contact with the camera, not the screen. Smile naturally when appropriate.
Energy and engagementVoice modulation, enthusiasm detectionVary your tone. Monotone delivery scores lower than expressive, energetic delivery.

Note: HireVue announced reduced use of facial expression analysis in several markets following regulatory scrutiny. However, the NLP, speech, and structure components remain active across all markets.

HireVue game-based assessments

For employers who add the cognitive component, HireVue delivers 4–6 game-based assessments embedded in the same session as the video interview. The most common games:

GameTestsDifficulty level
Flashback (N-Back)Working memory, sustained attentionHigh — most candidates find this hardest
Digit SpanVerbal working memoryMedium
PortraitXT / PuzzlePictureVisual memory, pattern recognitionMedium
ArrowsAttention and inhibitory controlMedium-high
Card Deck (Iowa variant)Learning from feedback, adaptabilityMedium

The game scores are combined with video interview scores using the employer's specific weighting model. For some employers (e.g. Goldman Sachs), the cognitive game scores carry more weight than the video content. For others (e.g. Barclays), the video content dominates. You will not be told the weighting.

HireVue by employer

Goldman Sachs: HireVue with heavy emphasis on cognitive games. 3 video questions + game battery. Numerical data interpretation games may be included for front-office roles.

Shell: HireVue VJT + ODVI combined. Games (Flashback, Digit Span, PuzzlePicture) + 3 video questions.

Barclays: HireVue pre-recorded video interview, 3–4 questions. RISES values alignment assessed via speech analysis.

Unilever (UK): HireVue game-based assessment + digital video interview as two separate steps in the UFLP process.

Deutsche Bank: HireVue pre-recorded video + cognitive assessment for some divisions.

How to pass a HireVue interview

Technical setup: Use Chrome or Safari. Test your camera and microphone before starting. Use a wired internet connection if possible. Film in a clean, well-lit environment — natural light is best. Look directly at the camera lens, not at your own face on screen. Dress as you would for an in-person interview.

Content preparation: Prepare 6–8 STAR stories before your interview. Each story should cover at least 3 different competencies depending on how you frame it. Practise delivering each story in under 2 minutes without notes. Common question themes: leadership, teamwork, resilience, commercial awareness, problem-solving, "why us?"

Worked example

A typical HireVue question

HireVue is a video-interview platform. Candidates are shown a question on screen, given 30 seconds to think, then up to 3 minutes to record a video answer. Answers are scored by AI (speech-to-text transcription + NLP + facial-analysis heuristics) and increasingly by human reviewers for senior roles.

Example prompt:

"Describe a time you had to persuade a team to adopt an approach they initially disagreed with. What did you do, and what was the outcome?"

Use the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and hit all four beats. Speak clearly, make eye contact with the camera, keep to 90–120 seconds.

Pacing

How to pace a HireVue answer

HireVue allows up to 3 minutes per answer but the sweet spot is 90–120 seconds. Too short suggests unpreparedness; too long suggests poor editing and loses AI-scoring keyword density.

Structure inside 90 seconds:

  • 0–15s: Situation — one sentence setting the context.
  • 15–30s: Task — what you specifically needed to achieve.
  • 30–75s: Action — what you actually did, with two concrete details.
  • 75–90s: Result — quantified outcome if possible.
Common traps

Common pitfalls on HireVue

  • Reading from notes. HireVue's AI flags looking-down patterns and inconsistent eye contact. Keep notes to 3-word bullet prompts at most.
  • Monotone delivery. Speech-energy metrics are part of AI scoring. Vary pace and emphasis.
  • Under-preparation. HireVue typically gives 30 seconds to think — not enough to structure a whole answer from scratch. Prepare 8–12 STAR stories covering leadership, conflict, failure, teamwork, and innovation.
  • Lighting and audio. More candidates are eliminated for poor setup than for bad answers. Good light on your face, clean audio, no echo.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can TestSolve solve HireVue tests?

Yes — TestSolve is purpose-built for HireVue assessments. It reads the question on your screen, calculates the answer, and delivers it to your phone in under 5 seconds. Works on all standard HireVue question formats including numerical, verbal, inductive, and situational judgement.

How accurate is TestSolve on HireVue?

Very high accuracy across all HireVue question types. Numerical reasoning and verbal reasoning typically achieve the best results due to the structured nature of the questions. Every answer displays a confidence score so you always know how certain the AI is before submitting.

Can HireVue detect TestSolve?

No. TestSolve operates outside the browser at the operating-system level. HireVue's monitoring detects tab switching, clipboard activity, and browser focus changes — none of which happen when you press F8. The answer arrives on your phone, not on your test screen, so there is no on-screen artifact for the test platform to detect.

Does TestSolve work for HireVue tests in other languages?

Yes. TestSolve reads the question in the original language and returns the explanation in that same language. Numerical, abstract and inductive reasoning work natively across every language. Verbal reasoning is strongest in English, Deutsch, Français, Español, Italiano, Português and Nederlands. Letter answers (A/B/C/D) are kept as-is.

How long does a HireVue test take?

Standard HireVue assessments run 15–30 minutes per test, with 15–30 questions. The average time per question is 30–60 seconds depending on section. TestSolve typically returns an answer in 3–6 seconds, leaving ample time to read, verify, and submit.

Is HireVue hard to pass?

The real difficulty on HireVue tests is time pressure — most candidates run out of time before they run out of ability. That's exactly where TestSolve helps most: it removes the calculation bottleneck so you can focus on reading the question correctly and interpreting edge cases.

How much does TestSolve cost?

One free solve to try, no signup needed. After that, question packs start at $14.99 for 30 questions (valid 7 days) or $19.99 for 50 questions (valid 14 days). No subscription, no auto-renewal.

If you want a shortcut: TestSolve reads each test question on your screen and sends the answer to your phone in about 5 seconds. Free first solve, no signup. Pricing.
